Ticking

The voters overwhelming agreed that Ginny Brown Waite has served our community well, by returning her to Congress for another term. Her 61% margin of victory clearly shows how well liked she is in her district. Congratulations, Ginny!
John Druzbick ran a clean campaign on the issues that face Hernando County in his bid for county commission. The majority of voters listened to his message which gave him a victory in his race against Diane Rowden. Ms. Rowden needs to be thanked for her eight years of public service to this community. John is so fortunate that he has such a great wife, named Debbie. She helped him every inch of the way in this election. Congratulations, John and you, too, Debbie!
Jeff Stabins should take on the old slogan of Timex Watch company after this election. The slogan that says, "Took a Licking but kept on Ticking" fit his campaign to a tee. Jeff took a proverbial beating on every inch of his soul, even the soles of his feet. This came at the hands of Hernando County Republican Executive Chairwoman Ana Trinque, their state committeeman, Tom Hogan and several other influential people in our community. Their personal vendetta to have him removed from office was an embarrassment to all Republicans in this county. Aside from this unsavory action, Jeff was overwhelming re-elected as our county commissioner. "Congrats Jeff, you are the man of the hour! "
On a sad note, Shirley Anderson was defeated for her bid for supervisor of elections after a very hard-fought campaign. After the votes were counted last night, many comments and accusations flew at the courthouse about the non-party candidate in this race. This candidate was equated as the "spoiler" candidate who got into the race just to draw votes away from Shirley. This may, or may not be true, but if it was a two person race, the incumbent would have lost in this race yesterday. Shirley, we love you. Don't ever give up on your dreams. You did a spectacular job, even if it came up a little short!

Either alc is grossly misimformed or is deliberate liar. What a shame when she could be truthful when writing "positive". The blog is terribly misnamed. The public knows the writings or rantings are sour grapes.

while I appreciate your comments, it must be said that you are truly behind the times. Maybe it's time you move on, get with the majority, and stop being such a sour puss, Ana.

Sad that you would actually consider Shirley Anderson competent enough to be the Supervisor of Elections. I am really surprised at you Ms. Covell. I thought of you as a person who did her homework; researched and got facts; and was capable of making a sound decision. Your support for Shirley instead of Annie is outrageous! I suppose you would have been one of those folks on her Citizens Election Advisory Council...the council that would have overstepped and disregarded Florida Election Law. You all would have been hauled off to jail.
Thank God the VOTERS had the last say!

Shirley Anderson was the most capable candidate of the three. In fact, her degree in Political Science gave her the best qualifications for the job. Its just too bad that it became a 3 person race because Annie would have been looking for another job today!

I have had several negative comments about candidates that were less than successful in this year's election. I will not print them on my blog, period! I will not use this site for the pleasure of those who are sore winners, making nasty comments about their formers opponents...

alc,

I like Annie very much, as I've found her to be exceedingly helpful to candidates irrespective of affiliation. As a former flack for GBW, Shirley ran a professional campaign, but one which smacked of opportunism and empty posturing -- can you name one concrete thing she would have done differently from Annie? I'm reading her website right now and I still can't. I take as an article of evidence of the community's faith in Annie's good nature that she was outspent by her opponents a staggering $36,000 to $1,300, yet still won, to my disbelief.

Anyway, I just wanted to quibble about one thing. Annie took a plurality of 40671 votes versus Shirley's 30887 and Gus' 12260, out of 83818 total. If Gus hadn't been in the race and all his votes were split between the remaining two candidates, Shirley would have needed to take a staggering 90% of the outstanding Gus votes to win by just one vote. Even with the most generous assessment of anti-incumbency mood among non-Annie voters, this is implausible.

I'm still shocked at the results, though. There's no way I would have guess that the only Democrat to win in Hernando County would have been the outspent and much-maligned Annie Williams.

Thank you for your comments, Estuary. I printed them because they were made in a thoughtful manner, without malicious overtones. I like Annie too, but personally supported Shirley in this election because I believed her (Shirley) to be more qualified for the position. Just occupying a position at the SOE's office for 20+ years (as Annie has done) doesn't necessarily mean a person is the best suited for the job.

Hopefully, Annie doesn't become complacent during this term like she did in her last four years...
